good to know...my salesman was new and he apparently didn't know that because he told me it was for fuel economy.
Yes, I wonder why the US models don't have the Eco mode..? Here in Aus we have Eco, Normal, and Sport. Very intuitive to understand, and as Speed mentioned, the drive to the rear wheels is negligible in Eco, happens just at take off or kick-down acceleration A bit more to the rear in Normal mode, mainly under acceleration, and a constant amount, varying to demand in Sport.

However, I do mainly drive in Eco, because, and as several motoring journo articles have menationed, it is actually a very usable mode, unlike in many other makes, where Eco is a slug. I find in Eco the rate of acceleration, say resuming set cruise speed after a highway slow-down, is about what you would do normally if not in a tearing hurry. Whereas in Normal or Sport, the thing kicks down gears and really belts along to re-reach the pre-set speed, and is definitely not as economical as just normal manual, non-cruise assisted driving.

Yes, true, and my bad. I really meant the omission of the 'Normal' mode we have. As I understand it, your 'Smart' mode basically tries to be all things to all people, but naturally this is so challenging as to be bound to fail at times. In other words it apparently switches through Eco, Normal and Sport according to your driving efforts at the time. That is a pretty big ask, so bound to not suit everyone all the time.

Actually, on that subject of the modes....I now know why I first said that I wondered why the NA models don't have the Eco setting, because Speedtek said that in Canada they don't have Eco, so presumably have Normal, Smart and Sport. But Kristine says she has Eco Smart and Sport. Are the US and Canada different then..? Can someone please clarify..?

Actually, in Canada SMART mode is said to be shifting between 'Comfort' and 'Sport', not 'Normal' and 'Sport'. So how's that for muddying the waters?
Ok, so what are the actual labels on your mode button/switch SHCS..? Just for the record...

Normal, SMART, Sport
Curiouser and curiouser, as Kristine says..."I'm in the US and I have Eco, Smart, and Sport mode". Any advance on that, anyone..? Does it differ from model to model even in the same country..? Or just Canada different from the Us, and both different again from Australia, and I presume NZ. What about India/Korea..? And here one assumed we were all the same species..? 😬 🤔

2021 EX here (2.0l AWD CVT), US spec.

NORMAL, SMART, SPORT
Now that's interesting. Only the two top models (Sport+ & GT-Line), here in Aus, and with the 1.6T have AWD. Each of those now has a FWD option, with all the GT-Line features other than the AWD and they have a CVT, not the new 8-speed auto. The latter only now coming out this year - previously the Sport+ & Gt-line had the 7sp DCT.

I just went out and checked and my 2022 EX has NORMAL SMART SPORT. And because I had to actually use the knob to see what I had, I forgot what mode I've been driving in for the past year and a half since I bought it. :)

So I kid you not. This is from the '22 Canadian manual (Section 5-71).
SMART mode: SMART mode automatically adjusts the driving mode (SMART ↔ SPORT) in accordance with the driver's driving habits.
  • NORMAL mode: NORMAL mode provides soft driving and comfortable riding.
  • SPORT mode: SPORT mode provides sporty but firm riding.
Note the instance of 'Comfortable' being linked to Normal Mode.
The driving mode will be set to COMFORT mode when the engine is restarted. If it is in COMFORT/ SPORT mode, COMFORT mode will be set, when the engine is restarted.
'set to COMFORT mode' ... wait what?
SMART mode selects the proper driving mode among COMFORT and OFF by judging the driver's driving habits (i.e., mild or dynamic) from the brake pedal or the steering wheel operation.
SMART mode select between COMFORT and OFF? I thought we had NORMAL, SMART, and SPORT. Whats this 'OFF? All joking aside, I guess that means SPORT should be NORMAL. Wait what. Is anyone following this?

Who translated this garbage?

SHCS, that just about up-stages the Japanese translations in their manuals, in terms of unintelligibility... 🤔 Clearly their translators are not very 'smart'. I wonder what our Aussie version says..?
