Maybe this has been covered before, but here’s my experience with swapping the original incandescent turn signal bulbs over to LEDs.

Overall, my main concerns with doing this were:

​

A. to Avoid “hyper flash” that commonly happens when replacing incandescent with LED.​

​

B. Leave factory wiring intact so warranty isn’t affected when it comes to electrical systems.​

According to the owner’s manual, the bulb type is a P21 which is essentially an old school number 1156. I work in a dealership parts department, so it’s old school to me, anyway. 😉 I searched Amazon & eBay in my spare time and found the following:

These are absolutely perfect! No hyper flash and no modifications needed to the vehicle wiring. Simply replace the original bulbs and they just work! They’re bright, too!

When removing the tail light assembly, remove the two screws that are exposed when you open the lift gate, then you have to get a grip on the assembly and give it a good pull straight back. It’s held in by a clip at the front corner of the assembly and it was pretty tight, but it came out. Be careful not to pull too far so don’t yank the wiring too much! I almost did!

Glad it worked for you! Not too difficult and definitely worth it.
I’ve since changed my license plate and reverse lamp bulbs to LED as well.

Isn’t P21 only 5 watts? I searched for “P21 equivalent LED bulb”, it gives me 1157.

P21 is shown in our manuals as drawing 21 watts. Page screenshot attached.

P21 is also roughly equal to an old school 1156 bulb. The 1157 is a dual filament used where a constant and an intermittent circuit are needed. Such as a tail lamp plus brake/turn signal in one bulb. Since this is a single purpose bulb, it’s an 1156 “style” unit. Sorry for getting wordy. I’ve been an automotive parts person by trade for many years, so I’ve dealt with this stuff a lot.

Since the body control module usually controls turn signals in modern vehicles, I did a lot of research to match up the correct wattage so the BCM wouldn’t get “confused” by putting the wrong bulb in and it drawing the wrong amount of power.

Mine’s still working perfectly and I’ve even upgraded the reverse and license lamps to LED as well.

This didn’t work in my SXT. I had to return it to Amazon. After two flashes, the system cuts power to the circuit. I think my SXT knows that it’s the wrong bulb!

That’s really strange! Sorry it didn’t work.

Those bulbs have roughly the same amp draw as the standard incandescent ones, so I’m really surprised. May have just gotten a bad set. Either way, sorry you have to go through that hassle.

I guess the set that I got weren’t of the same current draw as the OEM bulbs.. One did not turn on at all so I had to test it right at the battery terminal and it lit there. I wasn’t able to do more tests to the bulbs because I figured I’d just be wasting my time diagnosing it. I was sure that the computer is precise in its circuit measurement.

I find it very strange that the exterior lighting on the SX is all LED and very high tech with futuristic and intricate design. It’s really quite impressively done. Then they slap in those really boring incandescent rear turn signals. It just doesn’t make any sense at all…

I don’t blame you all for changing them. I will probably just live with it because I don’t hate them enough to risk messing it up. Haha

Also, these shouldn’t be able to mess anything up. They have the same electrical draw as the original incandescent bulbs so the computer doesn’t “see” anything strange going on. 🙂

I 100% agree about them being boring! After putting in these LED turn signal bulbs, I also updated my reverse and license plate bulbs to LED.

So what would be the LED bulb I could use for the license plate replacement? Also, how is the installation…does the cover just pop off?

The license plate lights are a 194 bulb. If I remember correctly, it’s a single screw on each lens cover. Comes off very easily.

These are the bulbs I purchased.

I’m not sure about the luggage light as I haven’t done anything with mine.

Nice! Yeah, I checked out the covers of the license plate bulbs since my last post, and they do look incredibly easy. As does the luggage light cover.
