So I bought my seltos (SX turbo AWD) in October and everything's been wonderful so far. Unfortunately, now I'm having issues with my passenger seatbelt alert everytime I get in the car. The seat will be 100% empty and it will chirp at me incessantly until I give in and clip the seatbelt in an empty seat. Called two different dealerships, and they both told me they can look at it, but they don't know when or how soon they'd be able to fix it because they have to run it up to kia corporate before they do anything. They're saying that because it's a new model, they have to report all bugs and issues to their tech department and then THEY decide what to do about it. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
FWIW, I noted this problem occurring about 9 mo after purchasing my 2021 Seltos S Turbo, so scheduled a repair appointment for dealer to diagnose & repair. The repair guy said to be careful of carrying ANY electronic items or metal items on the seats (I had a workout bag that weighed a few pounds and contained a USB-to-iPhone cable that I placed on the passenger seat when driving. Since the alert doesn’t say WHICH seat is the problem, I assume it applies to ALL seats in the car).
Turns out the culprit was a metallic dashboard sun protector (with two rubber suction holders on it) that I’d recently bought (I picked it up at the Dollar Store for a buck) that was somehow setting off the seatbelt sensor when placed on a seat while driving: once I moved it to the floor or elsewhere, the problem disappeared.
So this was a 100% reproducible issue (I tried it a few times, and within seconds of putting the folded metallic sun reflector on the passenger seat, the alert sounded again).
I’m not sure if the sensor sensitivity issue could be addressed via a Kia auto software update, but the easy fix: make sure not to place aluminum foil, electronic items, cables, etc on any of the passenger seats.
