Hi Everyone,

I bought my Seltos in October last year and I love it. Great car.

Recently I have noticed something that is a little odd and wondered if anyone else has the same experience.

The distance the Smart Cruise leaves between me and the vehicle in front when stopping in traffic seems to change. From what I would normally consider a reasonably distance, to something that I find far too close to the vehicle in front, and would appear the driver in the vehicle in front sometimes feels that way as well. It does not appear to be related to the set distance to vehicle in front whilst the traffic is moving.

It's not hit anything. But gets uncomfortably close sometimes.

I asked my the service manager at my 12 month service about it and he said it was slightly dynamic and depended on how fast the vehicle in front was stopping, the colour, and a whole host of other seemingly irrelevant things. It is certainly none of those things as I have had the more reasonable stopping distance followed by the far too close distance on stop start traffic behind the same car, 30 seconds apart.

Any ideas?

The gap should be speed dependent but not based upon the color of the car being that it's using RF (radar) for distance, not the camera. As you increase speed, it requires more space to stop. Nor do I feel the distances will function with perfect repeatability. Approximate how many feet does it vary by?

Thanks for the reply. It seems to range from six feet down to a couple of feet on occasion and does not appear a speed issue as the rest of the active cruise is brilliant.

I have had to apply the brakes a few times because I was concerned it would end up far too close or even perhaps kiss the back of the car in front.

What does changing your distance setting do for you? Your original post indicates it isn't doing anything. I assume you're not getting error messages.

The distance setting button on the steering wheel does change the distance on where my Seltos starts braking from fairly close to plenty of room. You could try making sure your windshield and radar sensor are clean and try again but I don't think it will matter based upon your description.

If it's giving you close braking distances in the highest distance settings, you need to go on a drive with the mechanic and show them versus telling them about the problem.

The only time my Seltos seems to cut the stopping distance tight is when the separation distance is set to close and the my speed is 50+ mph and a car is stopped way off ahead in the distance. Since this isn't an level 5 autonomous system, I brake the car myself to avoid the situation.

Maybe there is something they can do. I just don't rely on the system as being similar to a full autonomous system. It's an aid, not a substitute for driving.

I wish there was a way to engage the cruise control without using the adaptive cruise control. Even on the shotest car distance setting, I find that it keeps my car too far away/slows me down due to the vehicle in front of me way soon for my taste. I realize it’s safe, but it’s a bit much for me.

Has anyone found a way to engage cruise control without it being adaptive?

Turn on cruise control (red arrow) but no need to set a speed, then hold down the Smart Cruise Control adjust button (Green Arrow) for a few seconds, you should see a notification that says cruise control on your driver dash display, to go back to Smart Cruise Control hold it down again and it will cycle back to say Smart Cruise Control. I'm not sure if this setting holds after turning the ignition off and on or if it will maintain the last used setting.

I don't even use it anymore, cause it downshifts one to two gears going up even the slightest hills and here in Connecticut, and we are nothing but hills. It's poorly programmed for me. SUCKS

Perhaps you accidentally hit the button on the steering wheel and you didn't notice it
Make sure the distance you have it set at is the same every time. That way you'll know if it's working properly

There are three distant settings and I agree even to shortest setting to too far away. I live in the small state of Ct and there is ALWAYS traffic, so I rarely get to use it... The only time I use cruise is early morning. And the cruise is way to sensitive and down shifts a gear on the slightest hill and 2 gears if its a steep hill. I never see it down shift when driving without it. That also needs addressing.
