Won’t start in cold

I have a 2021 Seltos, purchased new in August 2020. I live on the east coast of Canada and we’re having a cold snap. Just tried to start my car with no success. It’s -19C which is cold but I wouldn’t think cold enough to prevent a start. I had a 2011 Soul for 10 years and she only had issues in the -30’s much later in her life. Is anyone else having issues with cold weather starts? I’m sick - this is the weather here and I need reliability. When I turn the key, nothing happens, it doesn’t crank or try. Accessories are all off and she was running all day, sitting for about 4 hours this evening. Any advice?

Hello fellow maritimer. When you turn the key on do you have any lights in the dash or instrument panel? If not you have a very dead battery. The battery could have been faulty right from the factory and it took it a while to fail.Take it to dealer and they can test it for you or any Canadian Tire store and if it is bad the dealer will replace it on a prorated basis. Now if you do have lights you may have a different issue besides the battery and that will call for a dealership visit.

My father had the same issue With his 21 seltos yesterday in the same maritimes cold snap. It was towed to Kia but by the time they looked at it it had warmed up. It started right away. They said they thought it might be a flat spot in the starter but because they couldn’t duplicate the problem they can’t do anything. So now he basically has a brand new car he can’t trust.
Interesting. My 2021 Seltos SX had no issues starting in the recent Alberta cold snap where it was several weeks of -25 to -40 Celsius not including windchill. Mind you, I have a weird obsession with insuring my blockheater is plugged in once it hits -10.
We were at -30C here for a couple of days recently. It started right up, and I was quite surprised at how willingly it turned over too.
Had it happen to me in Winnipeg little we while back. I thought it shouldn't have a problem starting being a new car (Kia Seltos 2021) but guess I was wrong and ended up needing a boost - guess I'll be plugging in from now on. Funny my '07 Accent started just fine not plugged in..

i have a 2021 kia and live in Selkirk. (got to love our mb winters) this is the first year with this vehicle. today i had to get it towed to a kia dealership in the city as it wouldn't start (started it twice yesterday) and when going to apply a charger/booster to it the hood latch broke and then the hood was froze shut. i hadn't washed in recently (last time dec some time) so a very frustrating day for this first time kia owner

Beautiful looking vehicle but no longer impressed. The more I drive it, the less I like it. Could have been such a good vehicle but there so many options missing. Hopefully, it won’t let me down in the next few years.
Well it's -15F here right now and so far mine is starting. Fingers crossed it stays that way. One thing that has caught my attention is that the engine turns over at about the same rate as it does when it is warm, which strikes me as rather unusual. It's normal for modern cars to turn over slowly in the cold to help protect the catalytic converter at these temps. The Seltos is the only car I've owned or, for that matter seen or been around, in the last 20 years that turns over fast in cold weather.

You’re right. It is somewhat unusual.
Good luck with your vehicle

Interestingly enough this happened to our 2022 Seltos a couple of days ago in Calgary on the first day that temperature went below -15C. The thing is, after 6 months of the car being purchased (August 2021) we took it for Service on febraury 2022 and they replaced the battery because ' it was faulty'. Now this happened. As I read your post…it makes me wonder if there is a trend on this. We had a Kia Forte 2017 before and this never happened, (even if block heater was not connected) and also I bought a GMC truck same day as the Seltos and the day the Seltos did not start up, my truck (not blockheater connected) started up with no issues….
